TAXES : write-off?

Kirby may be the worst purchase that a person can make.

With the direct sales, high pressure sales, the Kirby vacuum system will cost over $2000. Even the hottest little retail models are under $500. If the Kirby is supposed to last a lifetime (lets say 12 years), you could buy the trendiest model every 4 years. The 'Time Value of Money' alone says the latter is a much better deal. And then, who even wants the same old car sitting around the house for 12 years, let alone a vacuum cleaner?

After 3 months, you have realized that you never even had to change the bag because you don't use the complicated system of air pump, carpet shampooer, and workout gym (even the newest models are 40#).

Ours has been sitting around for two years now. We can finally accept the depreciation loss we will take and we would just like to get the space back from the closet. So we can Craigslist if for $250 or donate it and write off the taxes for $500. What would you do?

first of all, spending $2000 on a vacuum cleaner is insane. The $$ would be much better spent just hiring a maid to come to the house a couple times a month (and bring his/her own vacuum cleaner).

Economics of disposing of it thru a sale vs. donation would depend entirely on the person's tax situation. In general, if you could sell it for more than 28% of it's current retail value, then go for it. Otherwise, call "Family Homestead" or some charity who will actually use it, and will come pick it up at your house. This is what I would do - much less hassle than selling it, and besides the tax write off, it actually provides some benefit to others' lives who are less fortunate.

Wow, thank you for turning this ordeal into a positive opportunity.
I really like the argument for the maid and the new resource for donations.

Okay okay, I bought one. BUT..let me first say that after a four hour presentation, I got mine for $1100. I do use it very often, it does have a lifetime warranty, and I've used nearly every accesory in the 6 months I've owned it. It's a quality product. Don't knock it so quickly!

I am very impressed that you use the accessories!
I have seen dozens of Kirby accs boxes that have never been opened, like my mom's carpet shampooer ;-)
