Military demonstrations and follies

There is no doubt about how much influence I have gained from my friends and family who have served in the military.

This Kalashnikov (AK-47) video is very interesting, from the history and performance to the usage as a barometer of civil unrest. While the M16 (previously used by the US Army) is a high precision and accurate weapon, it is known for jamming. Since accuracy is only good for sniping, the AK-47 is an assualt rifle of choice for most combat troops around the world.

My friend, Aurelio, provides a lot of interesting history on the AK-47 (like where the name came from) in his interview.

The Active Denial System is a fabulous crowd deterrent. The military desparately wants this tool in Iraq, but policy makers are unsure that it will always be used properly (which would be short bursts from far distances to disperse violent crowds). With not too much imagination, the ADS could be used in torture/interrogation against a captive.

Are you going to hit that today or what?!

Whack-a-mole (this game is the official mascot of our Configuration Management and gets my boss laughing every time)

Interview w/ an insurgent.

Insurgent evaporated.

IED buried too deep.

Infrared fighting.
Robot dog.

Happy 60th Birthday AK-47?

AK-47: Such a loaded symbol; pun intended.

AK-47: the real weapon of mass destruction.

AK-47: The "Afican credit card...don't leave home without it."

AK-47: featured on the flags of Hezbollah, Mozambique & other international iconography.

AK-47: Symbol of resistance to the child soldiers in Sierra Leone.

AK-47 Seen as a peace-maker by it's creator Mr. Kalashnikov.

AK-47: Long lasting, legendary durability & can be buried in peactime & resurrected in time of war.

AK-47: Killed more people than the Atomic bomb.

I am interested in knowing how & why this weapon catches your attention (Steve).

I am intrigued with the AK-47, because this old, imprecise, highly-replicated weapon is always mentioned by gun enthusiasts, and now I finally see why.
Previously, I expected to purchase only a finely machined weapon, but now I would like to invest in something that will last forever with little maintenance.
The AK-47 v. M-16 is full of relevance in business and over-engineering WRT not listening to the customer (or gold-plating, or building the Cadillac).

...just noticed that you posted the pic & interview. Thank you. I'm working on the painting now--I'll send a copy of it your way when it's done.
